Life Unrehearsed Film Screening by Queer-Referat, AStA der Universität Bonn

Documentary in Korean/German with English subtitles.

In-Sun and Soohyun first met in the 1980s in Harz when both of them participated in a Christian women’s retreat. Soohyun gave In-Sun flowers, and In-Sun made up her mind about sharing her life with Soohyun, despite their close relatives’ disapproval, including that of her then husband’s. After they immigrated to Germany, they worked as nurses until their retirement. But they have never stopped caring for others. While Soohyun continuously devotes her professional skills to help an injured elderly heal, In-Sun has initiated an international hospice project. Consisting of immigrants from different cultural backgrounds, the hospice volunteers hope to offer those who cannot return to their cultural roots but face the inevitable death a sense of at-home-ness.  The two queer women are also connected with many politically engaged groups in the civil society, actively shaping and influencing their local community.

The unrehearsed but carefully self-examined life of In-Sun and Soohyun will engage the audience with questions such as how a person’s social experience brings out tensions between different aspects of one’s identity and how one’s life could unfold in a field of tensions. Furthermore, the film wishes to uplift young queer immigrants who might encounter marginalization and feel alienated by the unfamiliar culture through showing them an example of community building.

This event is accompanied by a discussion with the director Banpark Jieun, where audience members are welcomed to share their own experiences and ask questions.

An event as part of the annual festival contre le racisme.
